A wetland is a piece of land that is saturated or covered with water for at least part of the year.
Wetlands are defined by their soil, hydrology, and vegetation - they need good soil to hold the water, which supports the unique plants that grow in wetlands.

Bogs develop over time as dead plant matter (peat) collects in wet soil - it takes over a thousand years for one to form!
There are many species that call wetlands home and can't live anywhere else.
